Thanks so much for your many kind letters. So happy you enjoyed the story. I've included some of your comments below. The novelette is permanently out-of-print, but I still get emails asking where to find a copy. All I can suggest is searching the web, used bookstores, libraries, etc. I revised the story several times, so if you can find the hardcover version, it is the most complete.
My motive for writing the story was simply to outline my ideas for a pre-quel movie to Somewhere in Time, and I have to say, the real-life historical context was uncanny, and the story pretty much wrote itself. It is not exhaustive, only suggestive, and if you know the history, then you know it went all the way to the top of Universal for consideration. They didn't "get it", but the fans did, and I'm quite fulfilled knowing that. Good luck in your search, and hope you enjoy.
P.S. One question I get asked frequently is "Why is Elise a pig farmer in your story?" Because when Richard Matheson wrote the book Bid Time Return (on which the movie Somewhere in Time was based), he based much of his "Elise" character on the real life actress, Maude Adams (November 11, 1872 – July 17, 1953). He made the comment that the character was base so much on her, that he almost named his book, "The Man who Loved Maude Adams", but refrained as there were some elements of Maude/Elise that didn't match. At any rate, Maude raised pigs, and absolutely loved doing so.
Memoirs of Elise
"A book with uncommon and stunning beauty...
...that will carry on the rare and brilliant passion of SOMEWHERE IN TIME."
This sequel/prequel to Somewhere in Time was inspired by the movie's poignant opening scene. In this scene Elise McKenna sits alone in the darkness waiting for her opportunity to give a young playwright, Richard Collier, a watch, and to utter the enigmatic words, "Come back to me." The underlying emotion of the scene, and possibly of the entire film, comes from the fact that she had been waiting for this day for sixty years!
What had Elise been through in those sixty years?
How did she discover where Richard Collier had come from?
How did she find him?
Memoirs of Elise answers these questions in a manner that is loyal to the original story.
Come back with me!
"David has beautifully captured and built on the mood and mystery of
Richard Matheson's original story of Somewhere in Time. Memoirs of Elise will

desperately want more."
— Bill Shepard, author of The Somewhere In Time Story — Behind the
Scenes of the Making of the Romantic Fantasy Motion Picture.

However, your fine story remained faithful to the original story right down the line, and filled in spaces we all knew were there but hadn't been brought to our attention. Thank you again for enhancing an already magical experience." — Kim S., MI
"FANTASTIC! I was close to tears (the good kind) by the end. Such excellent parallels to the Matheson novel. After reading Memoirs of Elise, the film SIT has taken on a new poignancy for me. I'm just going over some of the phrases from your novella . . . I'm getting chills just thinking about them." — Glen N., CA
